It was the end of a Titan’s mission that allowed Dick to make the first move on his ‘plan’.
Arsenal… Red Arrow had joined in the fight since his skills had been especially needed and as it was Roy he was more than happy to help, even if it was just so he could see his old and new team mates again.
Even if Nightwing wasn’t one of the ones Roy wanted to see.
And Dick could understand that, because it was his fault that was so in the first place.
Arsen…Red Arrow had been complaining about his next mission with the Justice League, which would take a couple of days to complete and as luck would have it, he didn’t have a baby sitter for Lian. They were either all busy, sick or on holiday.
That was when Nightwing volunteered to take Lian.
The silence in the room was deafening.
“You…what?” That was Tim and Nightwing sent a glare his way that would rival his mentor’s.
“Really?” Dick noticed that Roy seemed disbelieving and a little reluctant. It hurt, but that was what you get for having a large stick up your arse for the last couple of months and being a jerk to your best friend, past lover.
Nightwing nodded, trying to keep his tone casual. “I have a week off of work and a few days off patrolling.” He waved his hand. “It’s no bother, in fact I wouldn’t mind taking her.” He let himself smile. “Haley’s circus is passing through and I can take her there.”
At the mention of the circus Roy’s features relaxed and he smiled thankfully. “Thanks buddy.” And Dick tried not to wince at the casual choice of wording. They used to be a lot more than buddies. “I’ll drop her off tomorrow and pick her up on Wednesday.” He looked at Dick again, this time he really looked at him and Nightwing tried not to squirm underneath the gaze. “I’ll see you then.”
Then that was it, he was gone. No goodbyes or even a clasp of hands.
But that was what the plan was for, to gain back the trust he had erased with his constant spewing of mistakes.
He wanted them to be best friends again, no more than that. He wanted them to be lovers. He would try, he would do his damn best to get it right this time but first he had to prove it; and reforming a bond with Lian was the first step.
Though, even if Roy refused to be lovers again he could at least be as close to Roy as possible.
He owed father and daughter that much.
--------
Dick was truly happy when he saw how much fun Lian was having.
It had been difficult at first, with her sending accusing looks his way but once they had hit the circus her face was constantly alight with laughter and she seemed to forget the many times Uncle Dick had left her and her Daddy.
Being with the owner allowed Lian to receive the best of the attractions and she even got to go over to the elephant. Even though she refused get too close, even after watching Dick get on the elephant’s back.
She had enjoyed the show even though she kept pointing out how the knife thrower could improve his throw and how the acrobats where no where near as good as Dick was. Dick just nodded and agreed with her.
Once they had gotten back to his apartment all it took was a bit of food a small story and she was asleep.
It wasn’t until the third day, the last day when Dick was again reminded how perceptive the seven year old was, and how she always looked out for her father.
“Uncle Dick?”
“Hmm?” They were watching one of the Disney movies Lian had brought over with her, with both of them sitting on the small couch sharing a buttered bowl of popcorn and some cold soda.
“Do you love my Daddy?”
The question caught him of guard and it took him a few moments for him to stop chocking on his drink and regain his voice.
“Do I what?”
An impatient look crossed her young face. “Do you love him?”
It still took a few more moments until Dick found his voice. “I love him very much.” His voice was quiet and laced with such emotion that Lian knew he didn’t just love him as a friend or even as a brother.
“Will you leave him again?” Her voice held no accusation just an understanding of the facts, it was said in a way that only a child could.
“No sweetheart. Never again.”
Lian seemed satisfied with that answer and went back to watching the movie, oblivious to her Uncle’s stare as she reached into the bowl of popcorn acting as if the conversation had never happened.
And Dick was reminded of why he had loved Lian so much.
--------
“Did you have a good time?” Even though Roy knew Lian had been in good hands he still hadn’t stopped worrying about her and he felt immense relief when she had jumped into his arms for the first time in three days.
They were on their way back home, driving through the city and it gave Roy the chance to see how well Dick had handled his little girl.
“The best!” Lian then went into a detailed explanation of the circus and Roy nodded and commented in the right places. Even though he didn’t say it he was slightly impressed on how Dick kept his child constantly entertained with little problems on his part.
Turning a corner Roy realised how much Dick and Nightwing had changed during this last week or so. He had heard his team mates commenting on the good change and even Robin had said that whatever had been weighing Dick down before had lifted and even Roy could see that this change was for the better.
He may even be getting his Robbie back.
Though he couldn’t get his hopes up. Dick had let him down before.
